In other news…

Version 1.2 should be out within two weeks. This is going to be a big improvement upon the first version, with iTunes support as well as the ability to import PowerPoint and Keynote files. Very excited to announce that!

Thanks so much for your questions. Right now, only videos and photos can be brought into the app through iTunes file transfers. You'll have to bring in PDFs using the "Download from web" feature and enter the URL of the PDF.

This also means that you'll need to put your PDF online where you can access. If you don't have web hosting, there is free web hosting at webs.com . Once you upload your PDF, you'd enter a URL that looks like…

For photos and videos, you can also download this way. However, you can also synch a folder with iTunes containing videos and photos. THen, you can load in the files.

The next version, v 1.2, is being worked on right now and is due to be released the first week of December. The next version will allow for PPTs and Keynote files to be brought directly into the app (no PDFs required) and you'll be able to transfer directly through iTunes.

thanks for the great work. I just bought in but i have to say I cant get it to work. I cant get a presentation on the app.
You should include and dropbox right away. Look at ithoughtsHD the did a great job. Also you should work on the buttons. Its not really clear where i have to click.

Here is a sneak peak of the TalkingPad app that I mentioned last week. The app should be available for download in September 2010 - or even sooner. One caveat - this video makes the application look like it's on a Mac II in black in white. The released version will have the look and feel of an iPad app and not a Mac circa 1992 app.

In September, a version of the TalkingPad app should be ready for download through the iTunes app store. This earlier version won't yet have all the features of the TalkingPad dream app, but v1.0 will get us 90% there. By Monday, I should have a walk through of this early version.

Cross platform - Windows, Mac, Linux and a portable version. Nothing for iPad or Android yet though.

First the app could create the ultimate broadcasting platform with both audio and visual presentation so that radio and TV merge into one system and all mobile. This could also lend itself to the perfect platform for a band or artist to showcase their talents and present themselves to fans, to promoters, to labels (if they are still in existence by then). Te he point it that the devise becomes any extension of who the artist or band is in terms of creating an experience, at a show every member of the audience could receive the band or artists app and be fully engaged on-going with them.

This would be game changing for bands and artists and enable them to reach their goals and dreams.

I also don't believe anyone is somehow saying that non-linear or zoom-in/zoom-out presentations are original ideas. It's just a different twist. When I use to work in the multimedia presentation industry, that stuff was very common.

I remember back in the day, my own presentations were non-linear and zoom-in/zoom-out features consisted of me walking over to the audience and handing them an illustration of what I was talking about.

I've seen it used in a lecture, where the speaker went non-linearly between slide-groups and individual slides.

It's a pretty cool concept - check out the videos on that page.

That's a good idea. As an option, I think if we just "shake" it, it will go into the original intended order. A bit of a reversal as normal shaking will shuffle things around. But I figure shake things into place.

I don't know if this would work so well on the ipad. Seth did say that the app should be able to use an external monitor but the original concept was for a more personal meeting. A meeting where the pad of paper is sitting on the table and 2 or 3 people are talking. I'm not sure this concepts works in this situation.

Maybe it could be the view you see when the TalkingPad is plugged into a monitor?

1. None of us have worked together: Thats not to say we trust each other but given that we don't really know each other forming a company might be a little rushed. Its a little like getting married on the first date.

2. We don't know if there is a market for this: Its very hard to tell if anyone would actually buy this app or not. I'm all for making a basic app and seeing if anyone buys it. If there is demand then it might be a good idea to set up a company.

I have a question about the navigation. If I'm zoomed in to slide 1 how do I get to slide 7? Would I have to zoom out and then zoom back in again?

If anyone else here would like to take a run at making an iPhone version of what Seth is talking about please let me know. The iPad SDK has been out for few weeks and it would great to see what people are working on these days.

Nowadays with the iPad, Multitouch controls are within our reach and I just started re-imagining what would be possible with that. The constraints I put on myself for the first design, where that the app needed to be controlled without mouse or keyboard (big problem devices for a lot presenters) and it needed to be understandable for my 60 year old teacher who was forced to present digitally because his slides where fading rapidly.

I'm interested in sharing my ideas about this concept. So feel free to ask questions and make constructive suggestions. We're thinking about starting this project up again, now most of the problems we ran into are being solved by the iPad and App Store

I have not seen any developers raising their hands to take on pro-bono development, so in the interest of moving this forward, I would like to consider the possibility of raising say $150K-$250K from angel investors to pay for the development of the App, and set up SaaS company to market it and provide the value added services. Something along these lines.

I'm really not sure how the import process would work at the moment. I think thats a little more technical and I haven't done any development on the iPhone so I really can't say how it would work.

I thinking you could zoom out when looking at the grid view and see other grids of 9. However, it might be easier to ship with just one cluster of 9 to start. We don't want to bite off too much at the start. If its successful I'm sure there would be time to add more than 9 slides.

How would importing content on the iPad work? Suppose I had students making a presentation about something in the news, how would they drag a picture onto a slide and add a bit of text under it?

Could each slide in the 9 slides have a link leading to another slide cluster? Perhaps a special gesture or an embedded hot spot or hyperlink on a piece of text?

Erm, yes, because I already do. I use a tablet PC and export to pdf. And the students have actual A4 sized whiteboards (laminated card with drywipe pens or you can buy stiffer boards from educational suppliers) and I can check that they all are getting the answers correct very quickly. We use 'u' shaped classroom layouts.

I'm imagining what a class set of iPads could do with some kind of web based whiteboarding software. But I'd also like to get group work going with instant web reference material available!

I think these two views are at odds with each other. This makes me ask what are we here for?

Are we here to protect our investment of time and money?

Or here to be Linchpins and give the gift of our art?

Personally I see this as a chance to be remarkable and to do something meaningful.

All I have to say is:

if we are able to create a killer app that Seth Godin blogs about I'm pretty sure we won't have worry about our investment not paying off.

Besides there is already a prezi.com why would you want to copy something that exists? :)

How much time do you think is required?

Also I don't think it needs to be anywhere near the level of power point or keynote. It can be very basic and still very powerful. Look at prezi.com. Its not the options or features that makes it interesting.

What if this app was a lot smaller to start with and grew over time?

A Saas based application really requires a company to back it.

An iPad app doesn't need the same infrastructure. There are plenty of small app developer teams.

I guess the question is do we want to produce an app or start a company?

On a side note I do like the idea of giving to charity.

Lets say you have a grid of 9 pages. When you look at an individual page it fills the space in the middle of the grid. If the page you are looking at is always in the middle you can get to any of the other 8 pages in the presentation.

I think the other pages might need to be rotated and numbered so that you can keep track of where you are in the scheme of things.

I'm going to post some pics in the UI section to demonstrate this. I hope that helps clear it up.
