Hi Andreas,

Thanks so much for your questions. Right now, only videos and photos can be brought into the app through iTunes file transfers. You'll have to bring in PDFs using the "Download from web" feature and enter the URL of the PDF.

This also means that you'll need to put your PDF online where you can access. If you don't have web hosting, there is free web hosting at webs.com . Once you upload your PDF, you'd enter a URL that looks like…

http://www.webs.com/yourusername/yourfile.pdf

For photos and videos, you can also download this way. However, you can also synch a folder with iTunes containing videos and photos. THen, you can load in the files.

The next version, v 1.2, is being worked on right now and is due to be released the first week of December. The next version will allow for PPTs and Keynote files to be brought directly into the app (no PDFs required) and you'll be able to transfer directly through iTunes.

Feel free to email me any questions directly at moc.ysteek|ofni#moc.ysteek|ofni .

Thanks!

Leor

Forum category: Forum / General Discussions
Forum thread: New app name

Hello friends!

It turns out that the name TalkingPad actually can't be used as an app name. Apps have to avoid using the word "pad" in their title. So, the new name is:

nonlinear

and the new website is…

http://www.keetsy.com/nonlinear

The logo is…

Hope for it to be out very soon!
Hello,

Here is a sneak peak of the TalkingPad app that I mentioned last week. The app should be available for download in September 2010 - or even sooner. One caveat - this video makes the application look like it's on a Mac II in black in white. The released version will have the look and feel of an iPad app and not a Mac circa 1992 app.

Enjoy!

http://vimeo.com/12907705

Forum category: Forum / Marketing
Forum thread: Sneak Peak at TalkingPad

Hi TalkingPadders,

In September, a version of the TalkingPad app should be ready for download through the iTunes app store. This earlier version won't yet have all the features of the TalkingPad dream app, but v1.0 will get us 90% there. By Monday, I should have a walk through of this early version.

Exciting times!

Leor

Forum category: Forum / Marketing
Forum thread: TalkingPad App Coming Soon

How about you shake to randomize because that just seems natural (though I'm not sure how useful randomizing the order is…); you pinch with all 5 fingers, gathering all the thumbnails together, then they spring back to their original positions. Also, at any moment, you should be able to (perhaps) touch and hold a thumbnail (this sequence is like the iPhone sequence where you move icons around), the thumbs start to jiggle and a popup menu lets you save the config.

So there's original config, random, manual, and saved configs.

-Rob

Forum category: Forum / Per page discussions
Forum thread: UI Mock-ups

I've seen this tried so many times in so many college classrooms. Usually the teacher requires the class to buy some sort of "clicker" device (which costs $15 rather than $500) and the students can then respond to questions etc. Problems become immediately apparent when dealing with the lengthy setup time and getting everyone connected to the system, usually wasting an entire lecture purely on this. Teachers aren't IT admins and consumer devices like the ipad are flashy and fun but why replicate the function of a $15 device when it has already proved to be at most slightly beneficial as a tool. As a computer engineer, I love good technology, but good technology cannot replace good teaching. And a tool like this wouldn't be effective without good teachers using it right as opposed to a classroom plaything which allows the whole class to vote the teacher off the island. (Not to mention the massive cost of forcing whole college campuses to pay an apple tax to participate in a discussion).

Forum category: Forum / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Expand on the Idea

XMind says they are working on an iPad version. I use xmind all the time on multiple platforms. Love it. Great when someone wants a copy and you can get them started for free. All they need to do is set up an account. If they want the paid premium version it is $40. Great value.

I look forward to the xmind version for iPad. That could be my "killer app" reason for an ipad. So far no killer app reason exists for me.

Dave

Forum category: Forum / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Examples Of Non Linear Presentations

Imagine the teacher being able to ask a question and instantly having their pad light up with green buttons. To ask a class to sketch an idea and post it - only to have a big screen light up with 20 - 30 thumbnails of sketches and the whole class can instantly see the results. Measuring the reaction speed to queries to see who is keeping up and who is falling behind in real time. Imagine the teacher getting 20 red buttons when they turn the class lesson into a boring exercise.
All this talk of the talking pad and the ultimate presentation system is really cool. I wanted to put my head in the ring with the basic outline of how it could be related to the music and broadcasting sectors.

First the app could create the ultimate broadcasting platform with both audio and visual presentation so that radio and TV merge into one system and all mobile. This could also lend itself to the perfect platform for a band or artist to showcase their talents and present themselves to fans, to promoters, to labels (if they are still in existence by then). Te he point it that the devise becomes any extension of who the artist or band is in terms of creating an experience, at a show every member of the audience could receive the band or artists app and be fully engaged on-going with them.

This would be game changing for bands and artists and enable them to reach their goals and dreams.

Forum category: Forum / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Expand on the Idea

Yes, good point about the pptPlex, but it doesn't look like it will run on an iPhone/iPad device. Correct me if I'm wrong bout that btw.

I also don't believe anyone is somehow saying that non-linear or zoom-in/zoom-out presentations are original ideas. It's just a different twist. When I use to work in the multimedia presentation industry, that stuff was very common.

I remember back in the day, my own presentations were non-linear and zoom-in/zoom-out features consisted of me walking over to the audience and handing them an illustration of what I was talking about.

Forum category: Forum / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Examples Of Non Linear Presentations

One of the first things I did was to just get the standard "Hello World" app set up so I can understand the process a bit more. There are a lot of good tutorials on the Apple dev site. Check it out.
Interesting concept. I think this would work well for presentation with an external monitor.

I don't know if this would work so well on the ipad. Seth did say that the app should be able to use an external monitor but the original concept was for a more personal meeting. A meeting where the pad of paper is sitting on the table and 2 or 3 people are talking. I'm not sure this concepts works in this situation.

Maybe it could be the view you see when the TalkingPad is plugged into a monitor?

Forum category: Forum / Design
Forum thread: Fluid: a concept for non-linear presentations.

I am a little unsure about setting up a company around this.

1. None of us have worked together: Thats not to say we trust each other but given that we don't really know each other forming a company might be a little rushed. Its a little like getting married on the first date.

2. We don't know if there is a market for this: Its very hard to tell if anyone would actually buy this app or not. I'm all for making a basic app and seeing if anyone buys it. If there is demand then it might be a good idea to set up a company.

Baby steps.

Forum category: Forum / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Expand on the Idea

In 2008 I finished my study of Media Design, with the concept for a tool that would allow people to do presentations without the linear constraints, forced upon you by the normal presentation programs. I heard a good friend (Martijn Aslander a professional speaker) complaining about these constraints, and with that complaint in my mind, I started working on a concept for an alternative. As a VJ I'm used to presenting my work in a Non-linear fashion, but curen't vj tools are not really suited for the average user or average device. So I started on the design shown in the link below, for an interface suitable for navigation by touch and enabling you the presenter to choose your own path through your slides.

[http://dl.dropbox.com/u/322349/Fluid_presentatie.mov] "warning this is a 140mb download and a huge video as it was made for dual screen"

Nowadays with the iPad, Multitouch controls are within our reach and I just started re-imagining what would be possible with that. The constraints I put on myself for the first design, where that the app needed to be controlled without mouse or keyboard (big problem devices for a lot presenters) and it needed to be understandable for my 60 year old teacher who was forced to present digitally because his slides where fading rapidly.

I'm interested in sharing my ideas about this concept. So feel free to ask questions and make constructive suggestions. We're thinking about starting this project up again, now most of the problems we ran into are being solved by the iPad and App Store

Greetings,

Bastiaan

Forum category: Forum / Design
Forum thread: Fluid: a concept for non-linear presentations.

The model I think would work is a free App (or paid with proceeds going to charity), and a SaaS company that can provide the value-added services that can be monetized.

I have not seen any developers raising their hands to take on pro-bono development, so in the interest of moving this forward, I would like to consider the possibility of raising say $150K-$250K from angel investors to pay for the development of the App, and set up SaaS company to market it and provide the value added services. Something along these lines.

What do you think?

Forum category: Forum / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Expand on the Idea

Thanks!

I'm really not sure how the import process would work at the moment. I think thats a little more technical and I haven't done any development on the iPhone so I really can't say how it would work.

I thinking you could zoom out when looking at the grid view and see other grids of 9. However, it might be easier to ship with just one cluster of 9 to start. We don't want to bite off too much at the start. If its successful I'm sure there would be time to add more than 9 slides.

Forum category: Forum / Per page discussions
Forum thread: UI Mock-ups

Tom Mink Said "Can you even imagine how cool it would be to teach a high school algebra class with what amounts to a portable chalkboard in your hand? No more facing away from the class! You can carry it with you and demonstrate a problem "on the board" while sitting next to the student in the back row that asked the question. You can archive every class and post it online in its entirety or edit it with additional links to connect to past or future class discussions."

Erm, yes, because I already do. I use a tablet PC and export to pdf. And the students have actual A4 sized whiteboards (laminated card with drywipe pens or you can buy stiffer boards from educational suppliers) and I can check that they all are getting the answers correct very quickly. We use 'u' shaped classroom layouts.

I'm imagining what a class set of iPads could do with some kind of web based whiteboarding software. But I'd also like to get group work going with instant web reference material available!

Forum category: Forum / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Expand on the Idea

I love Prezi but I think its a different type of non linear presentation. I feel like Prezi is more structured than this would be. Prezi works best when you setup a presentation/navagation path. This could be about slides and non linear navigation.

Besides there is already a prezi.com why would you want to copy something that exists? :)

Forum category: Forum / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Expand on the Idea

Why do you think this is going to cost that much to produce?

How much time do you think is required?

Also I don't think it needs to be anywhere near the level of power point or keynote. It can be very basic and still very powerful. Look at prezi.com. Its not the options or features that makes it interesting.

What if this app was a lot smaller to start with and grew over time?

Forum category: Forum / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Expand on the Idea

I think it depends on what the goals of the project are.

A Saas based application really requires a company to back it.

An iPad app doesn't need the same infrastructure. There are plenty of small app developer teams.

I guess the question is do we want to produce an app or start a company?

On a side note I do like the idea of giving to charity.

Forum category: Forum / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Expand on the Idea

Here is how I think the navigation would work.

Lets say you have a grid of 9 pages. When you look at an individual page it fills the space in the middle of the grid. If the page you are looking at is always in the middle you can get to any of the other 8 pages in the presentation.

I think the other pages might need to be rotated and numbered so that you can keep track of where you are in the scheme of things.

I'm going to post some pics in the UI section to demonstrate this. I hope that helps clear it up.

Forum category: Forum / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Expand on the Idea
