Hello friends!

It turns out that the name TalkingPad actually can't be used as an app name. Apps have to avoid using the word "pad" in their title. So, the new name is:

nonlinear

and the new website is…

http://www.keetsy.com/nonlinear

The logo is…

Hope for it to be out very soon! (it's going through the approval process again… tick tock…)

Hello,

Here is a sneak peak of the TalkingPad app that I mentioned last week. The app should be available for download in September 2010 - or even sooner. One caveat - this video makes the application look like it's on a Mac II in black in white. The released version will have the look and feel of an iPad app and not a Mac circa 1992 app.

Enjoy!

http://vimeo.com/12907705

Hi TalkingPadders,

In September, a version of the TalkingPad app should be ready for download through the iTunes app store. This earlier version won't yet have all the features of the TalkingPad dream app, but v1.0 will get us 90% there. By Monday, I should have a walk through of this early version.

Exciting times!

Leor

I have a group that I use to test my iPhone apps with. If anyone here would be interested in getting a group for Seth's iPad app, please let me know. You'll need to know how to get to your UDID. If you don't know, there is an app that you can download from the iTunes store. Just do a search for "UDID". A UDID is required when doing ad-hoc distribution of test apps and even for a more niched group.

Fluid: a concept for non-linear presentations.

early design work from 2008, for a non-linear presentation app.

 <wikidot:authorName>Bastiaan van Oorde</wikidot:authorName> <wikidot:authorUserId>442002</wikidot:authorUserId>

In 2008 I finished my study of Media Design, with the concept for a tool that would allow people to do presentations without the linear constraints, forced upon you by the normal presentation programs. I heard a good friend (Martijn Aslander a professional speaker) complaining about these constraints, and with that complaint in my mind, I started working on a concept for an alternative. As a VJ I'm used to presenting my work in a Non-linear fashion, but curen't vj tools are not really suited for the average user or average device. So I started on the design shown in the link below, for an interface suitable for navigation by touch and enabling you the presenter to choose your own path through your slides.

[http://dl.dropbox.com/u/322349/Fluid_presentatie.mov] "warning this is a 140mb download and a huge video as it was made for dual screen"

Nowadays with the iPad, Multitouch controls are within our reach and I just started re-imagining what would be possible with that. The constraints I put on myself for the first design, where that the app needed to be controlled without mouse or keyboard (big problem devices for a lot presenters) and it needed to be understandable for my 60 year old teacher who was forced to present digitally because his slides where fading rapidly.

I'm interested in sharing my ideas about this concept. So feel free to ask questions and make constructive suggestions. We're thinking about starting this project up again, now most of the problems we ran into are being solved by the iPad and App Store

Greetings,

Bastiaan

My small iPhone development company is interested in tackling the project, but I'm concerned that we'll be one of 10 such apps that appear in response to Seth's posting. Even if we produce a killer app, it might not be Seth's favorite, and if not then it will be hard to rise above the competitive noise.

I know there's no easy answer, but does anyone have any thoughts on this?

…I'm almost positive you could do EXACTLY what The Right Reverend Godin wants as an Adobe AIR application. Adobe AIR deploys on anything, including the Mac OS's. I bet it would work on the iPad, or at the very least you could do it with a patch.

And all AdobeAIR is is a glorified offline flash platform. If you can do it in Flash, you can do it in AIR…and you can do damn near anything in Flash.

I've got a lot on my plate right now, I'm just a blue collar tech guy living in the Real Estate/Finance world, but I'll try to fiddle with this on down the line and see what I can do…I've got a project up next that I've gotta do on AIR anyway so I can do them both at the same time. I'm 99% sure you could do it on AIR though. An actual trained programmer could do in a week what would take me a month, any code-ninjas in here yet? Am I right or wrong on this?

LM

I like the idea. I see it.

I question the "pad" as a delivery tool.

How do you picture yourself using this?
Are you sitting or standing?

Sitting…hmm probably not, but still, just for the hell of it, sitting…
is it on a flat surface or not… well.. the reflection of the light above your head means that it needs to be inclined, with one hand behind to hold, one hand to operate. Without trying to be comical, if we are sitting, we end up with a laptop with a modification (pie of books ?) to stop the screen from moving.

Standing…
Ok, how long is this presentation ? 30 mins ? It is going to get heavy.
Ok, so you will put it down somewhere when you are not using it. Good plan, but somehow this is going to break the fluidity of the presentation. Anyhow, let's assume you do that and you eliminate the weight aspect or holding a 1.5 lb item between your thumb and fingers, horizontally so it does not slip from your sweaty palm.

How are you going to hold this ? By the top, the bottom? where is your thumb going to be, on the multi touch screen ?

It really does sound as if you need a stand for this device. One that will hold the screen at around 15 degrees off the vertical. A laptop on a stool will do that.

I like the idea though. I also think that Prezi is pretty much there with the software concept.

Perhaps not quite as slick as you are describing or quite as non-linear but isn't this what Church worship presentation software already does? For example: http://www.zionworx.org.uk/features.htm (not a personal recommendation)
The operator can see a sub-set of the slides and select the next one to be displayed ~ very useful if the worship leader decides to sing the chorus again or jump back to an early verse!

Nice sketches, it helps to see the layout.

How would importing content on the iPad work? Suppose I had students making a presentation about something in the news, how would they drag a picture onto a slide and add a bit of text under it?

Could each slide in the 9 slides have a link leading to another slide cluster? Perhaps a special gesture or an embedded hot spot or hyperlink on a piece of text?

Just noodling.

The TalkingPad app can be used by anyone that interacts with other people in presenting ideas, proposals, etc. It can also teach our kids (and us!) to think non-linearly when we prepare ourselves in communicating our ideas to others. So, the appeal is universal.

So, we could develop this as a crowdsourcing project, but I think there are other options. For example, what about seeking sponsors for the project? We could crowdsource the funding for a small team that can develop and ship. We could also seek corporate sponsors, if for example, instead of making the app free, there is a charge for it and the proceeds go to a noble cause.
